I just read one of the trashiest news stories I’ve ever seen this morning – about lack of VGA adapters for the HP Mini 1000 and secondary display output problems from the HP Mini 2140; which implied that both problems were ever so serious and at large… this is coming from one of Apple’s biggest fansites disguised as a normal tech site. Mini 2140 secondary display output problems? Yea right… nothing wrong here, I can even connect an external 1920 x 1200 resolution monitor… and it works… connections to projectors is almost a weekly/monthly thing for me… and it works every time.
I’m pretty sure the HP Mini 1000′s port for external display is also the same thing as found on Sony’s Vaio P netbook, and not some proprietary port. So even if HP or Sony didn’t officially sell/lacks stock for those VGA adapters, why not head on to your nearest electronics store or eBay to find a 3rd party version?
Seems like the guys over there who wrote such a post are trying to down HP’s image and reliability. It’s as if Apple’s Mini Display Port (the REAL proprietary, Apple-exclusive port) doesn’t have its fair share of problems either…
To be honest, I’m quite sick of websites which claim themselves as “tech blogs” despite them being apparently and obviously biased towards a certain brand… and that brand only. I’ll save my rant in full for another day, but the summary of today is: if you’re singing praises about Apple products on an almost daily basis, why not call yourself “The Apple Fansite” instead of a “general tech website”? You don’t exactly have to create false issues or blow up a tiny problem of other brands either, do you?
Hey! I thought this was a HP Fansite?! What’s the Sony Vaio P doing here? True, but that still doesn’t stop me from posting a picture of probably one of the most hyped up products of 2009 and comparing it against the HP Mini, does it? It’s not mine anyway, neither am I even having the slightest thought of getting one (1. It’s way overpriced for what it REALLY is, and 2. It really doesn’t offer much over the HP Mini I already have besides the smaller size).
My initial impressions: The Sony Vaio P is small in size, it’s like the HP Mini with only a keyboard (chopping off the trackpad bit of the netbook to make the Vaio P a long, narrow PC), and comes in four colors. The Vaio P has a high resolution 16:9 screen with a resolution of 1600 x 768 pixels (that’s a little more than 200 pixels wider than the HP Mini 2140). The bad news is that if you thought the fonts and all were tiny on a screen like the HP Mini 2133′s, you’re gonna scream looking at the even smaller fonts on the Vaio P. I appreciate the trackpoint (or as some put it, the “nipple” point) on the Vaio P though.
The keyboard on the Vaio P has well spread-out keys that many will probably find better than on most other netbooks, like Asus’ Eee PCs and the Acer Aspire One. Compared to the HP Mini’s, the keyboard on the Vaio P has keys which are a tad smaller but better spaced out, though HP’s keyboards have the edge with a full-sized right SHIFT key and more “travel” when pressing a key… the latter, being my preference, is subjective.
Overall, I would consider the Sony Vaio P more of a luxury product rather than a true affordable netbook. While it does have some edges like a high-res screen and GPS, I’m not sure if the weaker-than-average 1.33 GHz Intel Atom processor and high price tag (almost two to three times more expensive than an average netbook) would make people rush for this thing.
My hands on the HP Mini 2140 that is! For those who are thinking “huh? you mean Mini 2133″, HP just announced the successor to the 2133 last night, and it’s called the HP Mini 2140. From far, it looks just like the Mini 2133, but look closely and you’ll spot a couple of design differences in some areas as well as a larger, higher-resolution (yes!!) 10 inch LCD. Under the hood, the Mini 2140 packs Intel’s 1.6 GHz Atom processor like other netbooks (versus a VIA processor in the 2133).
Of course THIS IS THE (unofficial) HP FANSITE and I’ve got some hands on photos of the Mini 2140! I’m also glad to report that the HP Mini 2140 runs a LOT cooler than its VIA-processor sibling, the 2133.
I know these aren’t the best photos in the world, but hey, I’ve barely spent a few hours with the Mini 2140.

Look, it’s the HP Mini 2140! (Left: HP Mini 2133, right: HP Mini 2140) Note the screen size difference.

Probably one of the factors that contributes to the HP Mini 2140 being “cooler” than the Mini 2133, besides the obvious processor difference, is the new air vent design. The Mini 2140 (bottom) lacks the additional grills, which probably reduce air flow, found on the Mini 2133 (top).

There’s also some differences on the underside of the netbook – a whole lot more vents (apparently, the white sticker on the upper right side is covering another big airvent). Mini 2133 on the left, Mini 2140 on the right. Oh, and for those who are curious, the new HP Mini 2140 uses the exact same 3-cell and 6-cell battery units as the Mini 2133 (great news for those existing owners planning for an upgrade).

You can see over here how there’s less bezel and more screen on the HP Mini 2140 (Mini 2133 on left, Mini 2140 on right).
It’s here, the HP Fansite! The unofficial community and resource for everything HP.
Hi, I’m Brad S. and I’ll be your MC for the site. Who am I? I’m a self-described technology geek and HP’s biggest fan ever. HP as in Hewlett Packard, not Hush Puppies. That’s probably not an exaggeration, I love HP a lot. And no, I do not work in HP, or Voodoo, nor do I have a shop of my own selling HP computers.
Why do I love HP things so much, you ask?
A lot of reasons. Too many to list that even if I attempted to write them all down in a 500,000 word long article, that would barely suffice. So enter the HP Fansite, the intention of this site is to share that passion with the world. I’ll be writing about HP products, bringing to you the latest news, things like that. Of course, the other focus that makes this place cozy is a community for “chit-chat over a cup of tea”, as I like to call it, about almost anything. Right now, I’m thinking technology and gadget discussions, user thoughts about HP products and ideas from you and me… but it’ll grow once you, me, everyone starts chiming in right? Look out for that in a few days’ time.
Stick around, it’s gonna be fun.
