ATI FirePro M7820 graphics leaked; and more Elitebook 8740w news
Bye bye Nvidia workstation graphics exclusivity, first it was the FirePro M5800 leak last month and reported marriage with the HP Elitebook 8540w. Just recently, news from an anonymous party has just surfaced about a new ATI FirePro M7820 workstation class graphics card that will feature 1 GB of GDDR5 memory and DirectX 11, and based off the powerful Mobility Radeon 5870 ‘gaming class’ card. And this puppy will find its way first into the upcoming Elitebook 8740w Mobile Workstation AND… get ready your tissues to wipe off that drool… the ATI FirePro M7820 will supposedly sit a step or two higher than Nvidia’s flagship mobile workstation FX3800M graphics card! ATI’s seriously been making a big comeback for the last couple of months and it doesn’t look like they’re losing steam anytime soon. In other news, the 17 inch Elitebook 8740w is said to sport a fully backlit keyboard (partial chiclet keys with numeric pad, no less), a “first” for an HP Elitebook.
When, when, when? You ask frantically. Patience is a virtue, my friend – likely this month. Who else here has a feeling that the leaked ATI FirePro M5800 will also appear alongside its newfound big brother, the FirePro M7820 at the same time during launch?

“Fully backlit keyboard”.
I hope they put it on 8540W and 8540P, too.
Never used it but my guess is that backlit should be more effective than Night Light.
It would be nice to have an early revision of 8540W (or new optional configuration choices) with Ati FirePro M5800 and backlit keyboard!

I hope the ‘partial chiclet’ style keyboard doesn’t mean that the TouchStick has been dropped. I much prefer the TouchStick to the pad and wouldn’t want to give that up.

@John: Rest assured that the pointing stick will remain, just like it has on the Elitebook 8440/8540. You can check out my Elitebook 8440w review (http://hpfansite.com/hp-elitebook/hp-elitebook-8440w-review/) and see how the new keyboard style looks like, and there has been no compromise or doing away with the pointing stick or its dedicated set of buttons above the touchpad

Yuck fully backlit keyboard… Hopefully it carries the nightlight. I prefer that because i know where the keys are. The night light helps me see paper work in the dark when i work.

Based on several readings of users owning EliteBook models with Night Light, they claim it’s much better to have a backlight keyboard than the HP’s Night Light. Believe me, it’s an advantage to have a backlit keyboard, as you always can buy an USB laptop and have 2 lights source.
